One Never Knows
by Sandi Alford (Email: sandi_alford@hotmail.com)

Something can be said about the unknown. We choose to believe only in things we can `see'. But I've learned from experience, that there is a lot that even when shown, we can't handle and comprehend.

I went to a party one night where another guest attending was asked to share a bit of her life's practice with us all. Catarena was a soothsayer. A lot of excitement and skepticism ensued throughout the room, but everyone agreed it would be fun.

The host was asked to give everyone a piece of paper and pencil, and we were asked to write a question, but not to disclose who had written it. Catarena left the room while we did as we were asked and a basket was passed around to collect the folded papers. The host shuffled through them and placed the basket on the dining room table, and asked Catarena to come back into the room.

Everyone got very quiet as she pulled a pendulum from out of her pocket and held it about six inches above the basket. As she started a chant, the pendulum started to arc back and forth, but not once did she move her hand or arm. Each time she started the phrase again, it moved faster then all at once her warble took on a different tone, and the pendulum seemed to resonate as it passed over a certain piece of paper. When it moved away, the sound stopped, but when it came back to it, the sound was heard again. Almost like being drawn to a magnet. She softened her chant to a whisper and stopped, as the pendulum was tangent to the one folded paper, resonating like a pitchfork. Everyone was staring at the thing and then at her, wondering what on earth they had just witnessed, and voiced it as well. She held up her hand to silence the ring of people, never taking her eye off the paper, and picked it out of the basket. The pendulum stilled its noise as she closed her eyes enclosing the paper in the palm of her hand.

The silence was deafening, but after a few moments, Catarena began to speak. ` You will retire these feelings of sorrow that have plagued your heart and mind these many months, and happiness will be yours again. The deadlines that have made you crazy for so long will be met, stop worrying.' Without faltering, she opened her eyes, looked directly at me, smiled and said, `I promise you Sondra, what I say is true.'

I just starred back at her, not knowing what I was feeling. How did she know whose paper she had picked, or what was written on it, when she didn't even open it and read it? Everyone was asking excitedly if it was true, and the person I came with was looking at me strange, and then started to laugh. I looked at him and asked him what was so funny. He said, `well, first of all, I think you should say what you wrote and lets see if it's your paper, or better yet, Catarena should say what's on the paper and then show us.' Catarena, nodded to Chris and answered, `Will it end?' Chris laughed again, `yes, it will end as soon as you've said what's on the paper and show it.' This time it was she who laughed at his misunderstanding and opened the paper to show him the three words that had been written in haste. I turned to Chris and told him, yes, it was my question.

Some applauded and asked if she would do another. She went through her strange motions another four times, and each time she got it right. Out of the ten people there, some still remained skeptical, saying it was just good guesses, and even said aloud the host must be in on it. But I knew differently. I had only known Chris for a couple of weeks, and hadn't told him much about myself. And it was I who popped in to see him that evening and he asked me if I wanted to tag along with him. So the hostess definitely didn't know anything about me.

Just before leaving, Chris was still going on about it all being a sort of scam when he mentioned the name she called me. `She didn't even get your name right'. When we got in the car to leave, I told him, yes she did. When I was born, Sondra was the name my mother gave me, but my father thought it sounded stuck up, so they changed it to Sandra before the certificate was released.

Strange, huh...
