The room is an added on upper level. The walls are covered with thw gray weathered wood of an old house or barn. The black boys who live in the room (about ten or twelve of them) are allowed to be doing only one of two things:
If their white parents are alone at home, the hole in the floor gets large enough for them to see the parents sitting down to a meal...the smell of the casserole wafts up to them. Their stomachs growl. They must, however, remain quiet and still until the parents finish eating. If they try to go through the hole to the food, the hole stretches out and they fall through it until they land back in the upstairs room.
If the parents have company over, the hole in the floor shrinks to the size of a periscope shaft, and one sticks out from the hole to monitor them. A single light bulb hangs from the ceiling, and the boys must use this poor lighting to scrub the weathered wood until they are told they may stop.
It seems to be a continuous loop. It plays over and over.
