Reiki in San Antonio

Carolyn Maloney I gave birth to a little girl in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1974 who experienced severe birth trauma. She aspirated herself when she was born and would completely stop breathing. Then she developed pneumonia, thrush, jaundice and a dozen other problems. She was not expected to live. I was told if I were Catholic to call a priest. We called everyone we knew. The Central Union Church Of Christ, The Mormons, the Buddhist, and a dozen of the different religious groups. Prayer works and it doesn't matter what religion or way its accomplished.

After a month or two, Makamae was finally released from the hospital and began having petite mal seizures. At the age of four, she had a gran mal seizure that even frightened her Pre-School Teachers who sent her to Hospital Emergency. She was diagnosed as Epileptic. A condition that she was certain to have all her life due to her brain damage at birth.

I think they used every medication they had available on her over the period of years. None of the prescriptions would hold her for any significant time. Her seizures changed as the medications changed. The most dramatic seizure was just after we moved to San Antonio. In 1984 when Makamae was 10 years old, She woke up screaming and wanting to run. We had to hold her. My husband held her down while I called her Neurologist. Doctor said if she continued for one more minute to bring her into the hospital. (He had talked of surgery just previous to that time).

Makamae had a wonderful Doctor, however, I panic'd. The very last thing in the world I wanted them to do was operate on her and mess with her brain. I sat down, holding her and put my hand on her head. I knew where the seizure activity was supposed to be. Over the years there had been many CT Scans and medical documentation on the problem area. I didn't know what else to do. I focused on changing the energy pattern that was causing the problem.. Her screaming lessened and then stopped. I had been doing something similar to get rid of my own migraine headaches for a few years and it was my last resort with her.

Her next MRI was clean of that nerve tangle. She still has some brain damage suspected in the frontal lobe that prevents her from thinking like others, but I am not so sure that's a failing. It seems to be more of a gift. I had not really put any name or words to describe it. I called it a mother's love for ages and never really talked about it. Living in Hawaii for a number of years there was a kinship with the people there. Everything was so open due to the many cultures, attitudes and belief systems. Their attitude to healing was "So what, my Auntie does that too." So it was something I probably could have understood better talking to friends and family in Honolulu.

But I wasn't in Hawaii anymore. I looked at many healing methods after that incident and finally took Reiki here in San Antonio beginning in 1994. Reiki was from Japan then Hawaii and I had lived there, so, It seemed logical for me to take these classes. I've been teaching Reiki since 1995 and it's the best explanation I have of what happened to my daughter, my gift. Over time teaching nurses at a local college, I discovered that the families from Mexico had been doing alternative healing for centuries but it wasn't generally discussed.

Today, Jan 2007, Makamae has been off all medications for 15+ years and still has not had a seizure. She took classes in Karate and has a black belt in one form and working on a Brown belt in another style. She is also Level III - Advanced Reiki Practitioner. The healing form and the martial arts forms are the opposites of each other. The Yin / Yang balancing that is part of Asian Medicine theories. These opposites are like breathing for her, a part of life.
